Delaware River Road Tour

The Delaware River Road Tour visits Bucks County bridges near the Delaware River, with a side trip to New Jersey's only old covered bridge.

Route: From Philadelphia, take Interstate Highway 95 north. Take the Yardley exit, the last exit in Pennsylvania, and turn left. Take a right just beyond the interchange, on Woodside Road, crossing over the canal and turning left on route 32. Continue through Washington Crossing State Park area at the bridge to New Jersey. Turn left on Lurgan Road. You will pass an entrance to the Bowman's Hill Tower in the northern area of Washington's Crossing State Park. Turn right on Covered Bridge Road, also known as Van Sant Road. At Pidcock Creek you find Van Sant Covered Bridge.

Continue on Covered Bridge Road tending to the right and turn right on Aquetong Road, left on Rt. 32, River Road. Continue through New Hope to Center Bridge and turn right on Rt. 263, crossing the bridge to Stockton, N.J.

A Sign of Past Times in New Hope

The song says "There's a small hotel, with a wishing well -- I wish that we were there..." That small hotel is in Stockton, according to some sources. It is the Stockton Inn. Jog to the left and leave Stockton on the Stockton-Flemington Road and turn left on -- guess what? -- Covered Bridge Road. Turn right on Lower Creek Road, paralleling Wickecheoke Creek to Green Sergeants Covered Bridge, the only historic old covered bridge in the Garden State of New Jersey. Retrace your route back to Stockton and cross the bridge back to Penn's Woods, and turn right again on River Road, Rt. 32.

Continue upriver through Lumberville and Smithtown to Erwinna. Turn left on Hill Road and follow it around to the right to the Erwinna Covered Bridge. If you are fortunate enough to be here in late December or very early January, you may see the bridge in its Christmas finery. Retrace your route back to Route 32 and turn left, continuing upriver to Uhlerstown. Turn left on Hill Road to the Uhlerstown Covered Bridge. This beautiful bridge is unusual in that it crosses the Delaware Canal rather than a natural stream.

Return to Rt. 32 and retrace your route downstream past Tinicum County Park and the Stover House to Dark Hollow Road. Turn right on Dark Hollow Road and right again on Cafferty Road to the Frankenfield Covered Bridge. Return to Dark Hollow Road and turn right and continue on Dark Hollow. Just past the Stover-Myers Mill, go straight ahead on Schlentz Hill Road to Cabin Run Covered Bridge. Continue on Schlentz Hill road to Stump Road, turning right. Turn right at Carversville-Wismer Road. Just after Carversville-Wismer Road jogs sharply to the right, arrive at Loux Covered Bridge, also on the creek known as Cabin Run.

Do a U-turn and return through the bridge travelling southeast on Carversville-Wismer road. Turn right on Stump Road and left on Route 413. Follow Route 413 to Wrightstown, and just beyond Wightstown, turn southeast (left) onto Twining Bridge Road and turn left on Swamp Road. Enter the park at the entrance off Swamp Road just southeast of Twining Bridge Road. Park at the head of Covered Bridge Trail and hike downhill and to the left to Schofield Ford Bridge. This area is largely used for equestrian recreations -- boots are not a bad idea!

Return eastward (right) on Swamp Road as you leave the park, and you will find yourself on the Newtown Bypass. Continue to the interchange with Interstate 95 south and return to Philadelphia.
