Resources for the Study of Covered Bridges

These documents have drawn information largely from the following sources:

A widely recognized authority, and the source of the WGCB classification numbers, is the World Guide to Covered Bridges, edited (1972 edition) by Oscar Lane and published by the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Inc. (South Peabody, Mass,1972); revised under the editorship of Bill Helsel (Marlboro, Mass. 1989).

Richard Sanders Allen, Covered Bridges of the Middle Atlantic States, (Brattleboro, VT, The Stephen Green Press, 1959) and

-- -- -- Covered Bridges of the Northeast, (Brattleboro, VT, The Stephen Green Press, 1974) are oriented toward the history of covered bridges, and are not comprehensive, but provide valuable background information.

Brenda Krekeler, Covered Bridges Today, (Canton, Ohio: Daring Publishing Group, 1989) includes a number of states with pictorial coverage, including some really exquisite color photographs. It is not comprehensive in most cases but is especially strong for Ohio and Indiana. Pennsylvania bridges are pretty extensively documented in

Benjamin D. Evans and June M. Evans, Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges: A Complete Guide, (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1993), a recent with pictures of all the Pennsylvania bridges.

Susan M. Zacher, The Covered Bridges of Pennsylvania, A Guide, (Harrisburg: the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1989), the official guide.

Much of the print information on covered bridges is local and may not be easily available in other areas. For Oregon, note Bert and Margie Webber, Oregon Covered Bridges: An Oregon Documentary in Pictures (Medford, Oregon: Webb Research Group and Pacific Northwest Books Company, 1991).

Not used in these documents, but mentioned for those who may be interested, are
