Wooddale Bridge

For years I have been saying that there is only one surviving bridge in Delaware State. I was wrong. I'd post a picture of my red face, except a picture of my face would crash all but the most reliable computers, which are Macintoshes, of course. So, out of kindness to those of you on Wintel machines and Unix boxes, no picture of me.

According to "Covered Bridges of the Mid-Atlantic States," four covered bridges survived in Delaware in 1959, though one, south of Ashland, was then in ruins. In 1991, I thought I had found the sites of the four, but I looked in the wrong place for the Wooddale bridge. Thanks to Tom Gears for correcting me.

Wooddale Bridge is located off Rolling Mill Road, sometimes known to Tom and other locals as Rolling Road. Rolling Mill Road can be approached from route 48, turning north, or from Barley Mill Road, turning south. The bridge is to the west and links a few houses (in 1959, one) on the west side of Red Clay Creek with the east side.
