Selected Oregon Covered Bridges

These pictures and descriptions result from an Oregon Vacation in the summer of 1992. With limited time, and much to see in Oregon, we visited only 11 of 58 standing Oregon covered bridges (as documented in Oregon Covered Bridges, by Bert and Margie Webber, Medford, Webb Research Group, 1991). Our itinerary was from the Portland airport to Cannon Beach and down the coast, through a soupcon of California to Klamath Falls, Crater Lake, back to the coast via Roseburg, and then back to Portland via Albany. It was mostly on the return northward from Klamath Falls that we explored for bridges.

Nevertheless, we did visit one bridge on the southbound leg. It was Drift Creek Bridge -- a hard bridge to miss. Returning from Klamath Falls via Roseburg, we took side trips to visit the Horse Creek Bridge at its new site, Neal Lane and Rochester Bridges at their original sites, and the Remote Bridge -- otherwise known as Sandy Creek Bridge. After a few bridgeless, but otherwise rewarding, days at Bandon, we headed for Portland, visiting the Pass Creek, Centennial, and Chambers bridges in Douglas County and the Hoffman, Gilkey and Shimanek bridges in Linn County.

This indirect route brought us back to Portland and the Portland Airport. Perhaps we will be able to complete this portfolio of Oregon covered bridges -- some day.
