Oriental Despotism

The "oriental despotisms" that have worried some Marxist theorists seem to be variants of tribute society in which the tribute is highly centralized under bureaucratic control. The Ottoman Turkish style of society (explicitly founded on conquest) in which all are, in principle, slaves of the Sultan is at one end of a spectrum; the individualistic world of Roman latifundia worked by slaves (who were generally the booty of war) is at the other end.
